Pictures, while telling a story, often leave more questions than answers.

Barney, are you just trying to be provocative or do you really believe that?  Maybe you just need to get out of Clinton a little more often - lol!

Here you go.  Camanche, Dewitt, and Fulton are 3 communities near Clinton.  Drive from one end of town to the other - in any or all of these communities - and I guarantee you will not find the widespread problem that you see in Clinton.  If you think the photos I posted represent the entire scope of the problem I promise you they're just the tip of the iceberg.

I know I know, you love Clinton warts and all.  Well, I would just challenge you, Barney, to figure out the difference between warts - that do indeed exist in every community - and the cancer that afflicts Clinton's neighborhoods from one end of town to the other.

You can borrow my camera.

What questions would those be, Andy?

I'm going to leave the statement stand as is, at least for the time being.

I do though agree with you, there are some real issues the city should address. Safety and Health being at the forefront.

Good point, Andy.  There are certainly health and safety concerns at stake here that go way beyond the "nuisance" factor.  How would you like to be living next to a home with junk cars in the back yard where your kids could wander into?  There was one home that even had a junk refrigerator in the backyard with the door still on.  How dangerous is that?

But hey, priorities are priorities.  First we've got to replace that security fencing on the old barge...right?

You know, a truly junk car which a child playing in the neighborhood could be locked in, cut or in some foreseeable way be caused injury, that vehicle should be towed. Same holds true whether it be an abandoned refrigerator, or just a pile of (true) dangerous junk. Gang tagging, I think our local jail should provide the labor for cleanup (ball and chain if required), tools and material to be donated by anyone that cares (I'll give the first gallon of paint, and pay to rent the power washer).

The main point I emphasize is health and safety, gang activity as far as I'm concerned falls under that category. I

If it falls into the area of clutter, or a nuisance because it doesn't meet someones subjective approval. That's when those questions I referenced arise.

"But hey, priorities are priorities.  First we've got to replace that security fencing on the old barge...right?"

Those darn gulls, they might slip and fall in the water. Maybe we could close off Riverfront once a week and have local target practice. Bounty:  $5/rat, $1/gull, $.50/pigeon, Ducks and geese get donated to the new restaurant for the dinner menu.

I find it interesting the close bond we have between our mayor and the chamber, almost as though they were related. One gets a feeling they have those little family meetings to decide the direction of the city.

Yeah, Andy, you'd think this was a brand new problem, but hey...look what I found from the Herald's archives back in August of 2006...same song different tune.

Supervisors get CRDC update

August 08, 2006

By Danica Baker
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON —[Clinton County] Board member Grant Wilke...mentioned a need for an improved appearance on streets and in local neighborhoods. He said residents should be encouraged to set an example in their own yard.

“You don’t get a second chance to make that first impression,” said Wilke. He noted that if residents take extra care in making their homes more attractive, it can increase the aesthetic appearance of a city and possibly lower crime rates.

Lauver agreed, saying the Clinton City Council has been addressing the issue and that he would like to see a broad-based program with incentives for residents to improve the appearance of their properties. Todtz added that it would add a community pride aspect to the region.

“Appearances say a lot about a community,” said Todtz.

You said a mouthful, Louie.
