Obama Watch

Some of the most interesting news items are buried on the back pages of newspapers.

For instance, this morning I read an AP article on page A12 that reported yesterday President Obama overturned a 22 year-old travel and immigration ban against people with HIV beginning early 2010. At the same time he signed a bill to extend an HIV/AIDS program that provides medical care and support services that presently covers about a half million people.

Wouldn't you think this would be on the front page since we're in the middle of a national health care debate that's about how many dollars we should spend to provide basic health care for all?

Hmmm...something to think about.

I am in need of some help. First I am trying to get the phone number of Travis Rupp. I saw his name in the newspaper earlier this year saying that he did lawn work and I need to get an estimate from him for next year. And along this same line, if anyone knows of someone who is in the business of lawn care (mowing, weed trimming etc) please post their name and phone number here. They must have their own insurance and equipment. Thanks!!!

City Charter

Somebody help me. Don't we have city charter that allows the citizens to call for a vote on things we may not agree with? I remeber a few, ok, quite a few years ago there would be referendums brought up for the publics vote.
I tried to read the city charter that is online and just couldn't understand it.

I would love to see the 19th Ave No project brought up for a vote! That is if it still can be.

Haunted Houses

As it is the time of year for Haunted Houses, I was wondering what ever happened to the ones that the Clinton Jaycees used to put on? I can remember looking forward to the Haunted House that used to be above Benders Music then at the old Baldwin School.
Is Clinton not a big enough town to support a decent Haunted House? There are enough locations to hold one. Seems like something that has just gradually faded away from town.

The "New" Sisters' Caf in the Old Maude's is Very Nice. Nice to see Berol(?) is still waiting on morning meal customers!

Breakfast was great... but- I wonder why a simple meal costs Two Bucks More for Just adding Hash Browns?

So- I see that the 'Bluebird Caf' has opened in the sisters' old location on 5th Ave S..... anybody experienced that, yet?

and- What's with Doughboys?... The "retired" sign is off the door and Lights were On in there this morning.

UNWIND has been open for awhile. This place is for SERIOUS Knitters and Crocheters..... There are No Cheap, Wal-Mart approved materials here- So- Don't enter if you can't fathom the differences in 'Quality'.

The lady needs to offer classes and start-up an email list.

The 'knitting community' should be Happy that someone has invested their resources in the Clinton area.

Clinton to vote on delaying rail port project

The Clinton City Council will hold a special meeting today to vote on a resolution to delay a $10.8 million rail port and industrial park project and return $2 million in funding awarded by the state.

The grant awarded by the Iowa Department of Transportation Commission last spring came from federal American Reinvestment and Recovery funds, and was part of $5 million in funding awarded to rail projects throughout the state.

The resolution cites several reasons for delaying the project, including the lack of funding for the entire project, inability to meet bidding deadlines established by the Iowa DOT and the "current economic climate."

Steve Ames, president and CEO of the Clinton Regional Development Corp., said in May that he hoped rail service to the proposed industrial park, located near Low Moor, would be complete by the end of 2010.

Ames said Thursday that giving back the $2 million in grant money could delay the completion of the project, but that the development group has a strong partnership with the City of Clinton, Clinton County and the state and that they are committed to seeing the industrial park and rail port built.

"We're just kind of stepping back to evaluate where we are at this point in time," Ames said.

Development - Cost benefit vs Ethics

I hear the city is or has already condemned private property to cover their ass with the DNR. One developer seems to be the past and future recipient of this action. They say it's legal (which it may be) but is it ethical.

Why hasn't any of this been in the news.

"Favorite pet" contest

Does anyone here have any info (Clint???) on the Humane Society's involvement with the herald's current favorite pet contest?

Everyone entering their pet's photo and everyone wanting to cast a vote must pay a fee - $10 to enter, and $.50 (fifty cents) per vote with a minimum of 10 votes required. According to the contest rules "The Clinton Humane Society will receive a portion of the proceeds." No where that I can find does it mention what the "portion" is or what the rest of the money will go to.

Is this just a lousy money raising scheme by that poor excuse for a newspaper?

Clinton Film Fiasco

This just in.

In light of the recent investigation into Iowa's film, television and video promotion program we can now divulge that the city of Clinton - and some of its more well-known citizens - had been under serious consideration for a series of movie projects previously starred in by none other than one of the most beloved and popular actor/directors in Hollywood history - Clint Eastwood.

These remakes were to be a testament to both the integrity of the films themselves and the incredible subject matter that would have made for riveting storytelling.

Here are just a few that were being rewritten and reworked shortly before the state's film office came under fire.

Million Dollar Baby - The birth of the marina restaurant from conception to...well, the final chapter hasn't yet been written and now may never be.

Paint Your Barge - a remake of "Paint Your Wagon" had just been assigned to a screenwriter for re-adaption before scandal rocked the film world. Industry insiders say this may well have led to a sequel "Million Dollar Baby II".

Sudden Impact - Follows the saga of The Sewer Bill Movement. Quality camera work capturing protesting residents as they erect outhouses in backyards throughout Clinton.

Absolute Power - This sequel follows the campaign and successful election of present Mayor Holm. Tax credits galore according to anonymous sources.

Dirty Gary - A remake of the wildly successful film "Dirty Harry" tells of the downfall of previous city administrator Gary Boden. Incoming administrator Jeffrey Horne's own story - "The Rookie" - would have followed.

Thunderbolt & Lightfoot - Tentatively re-titled "Blunderbolt & Lighthead" showcasing two of Clinton's most senior council members, Bob Soesbe and Darrel Smith. This movie was one of Eastwood's rare comedies.

Pale Rider - Follows the exploits of super-hero Mike Kearney as he photographs evil-doers scaling the iron fence surrounding his ivory tower. Clint Eastwood meets Michael Moore. Cinematic history in the making.

Two Mules for Sister Sara - The symbiotic relationship between councilwoman Bette Oakley and real-estate development team Steve Howes & Dan Jeffries. A true mystery as the audience tries to unravel the identity of the real mule. Another rare Eastwood departure.

A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More - The expert blending of two classic Eastwood spaghetti westerns - said to be produced by restaurateur Mike Rastrelli himself - a rare prequel never before found in Eastwood films that follows the rising fortunes of Howes & Jeffries as they head into the sunset of Valley West.

We can only weep at what might have been.

Why don't people...

Learn to follow traffic laws!!! For instance, at the intersection of Manufacturing and Valley West Ct (right in front of Quiznos and Anytime Fitness) too many times people are doing it wrong. Let me see if I can explain this. If I am in front of Q/AF I have three choices (left, straight or right) and I want to go straight, I have to look both ways and go when there are no cars in my way. And for the traffic coming toward me they also have the same three choices, but they have a lane for each direction. Again today I had someone wanting to turn left from the middle lane, which is only for vehicles going straight. Also at this intersection, not many people seem to get what it means to yield the right of way. Hey, dumbass, if you are turning left, you have to wait until there are no cars going straight through the intersection. Again this afternoon, some chick in a red truck turned right in front of me, she didn't yield the right of way. It isn't I go, you go. It is called yielding the right of way. I have seen something similar to this at Mill Creek pkwy and 13th Ave N. If I am on 13th and I want to go south on the pkwy, I have to wait until there are no cars waiting to come straight through 13th. Some people seem to think that it is again I go, you go at that intersection too and it isn't. Way too many people need to go through remedial drivers ed!!!!
